Tips for Introverts on Dealing With Discrimination at Work During and After a Pregnancy - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / Tips for Introverts on Dealing With Discrimination at Work During and After a Pregnancy - Introvert Whisperer Tips for Introverts on Dealing With Discrimination at Work During and After a Pregnancy Workplace discrimination is an unfortunate reality for some people. Each reason for discrimination is wrong, and one of those reasons is pregnancy. While some employers are helpful and accomodating during an employeeâs pregnancy, others may view this time as a hindrance to an employeeâs performance. There are many ways that a person may feel discriminated against as a result of their pregnancy, but it can be especially difficult for introverts to deal with given the personal nature of pregnancy. In order to deal with issues resulting from pregnancy discrimination, itâs helpful to know your rights and to make your happiness and health a priority. If you are experiencing discrimination, know that there are steps you can take to protect your rights. How You Might Experience Discrimination Related to Pregnancy There are many ways you may experience discrimination during or after pregnancy. This can hinder a personâs place in their company, their employee rights, and their overall happiness. Some examples include: Being denied an area to breastfeed: Despite the many health benefits of breastfeeding, many still discriminate against women who breastfeed their children. Employees have been fired for asking for breaks to feed or pump, denied breaks when leaking milk, or not given a private space to pump. Being punished for time off needed for appointments: Both during pregnancy and after, mothers will need time off to attend mandatory doctorâs appointments. Some employers may punish those who take more time off than the average employee to get to their appointments. Being overlooked for raises and promotions because of maternity leave: Maternity leave is an important time for mothers and their babies, but some employers see this time off as a hindrance and look over capable employees for raises and promotions due to their need for maternity leave. Being discriminated against due to weight: Weight can be a difficult aspect during and after pregnancy. Unfortunately, some employers also discriminate on the basis of BMI, which can lead to fewer opportunities for advancement. Why This Can Be Hard for Introverted Employees Workplace discrimination is hard on any kind of person, and the same is true for introverted employees. Not only does it require you to have difficult conversations, it takes a very intimate and private experience and makes it more public. For introverted employees who often prefer to keep to themselves, this can be especially difficult to maneuver. Itâs helpful to have open and honest discussions with your manager, but discussing conflict can be hard, especially for introverted employees. For that reason, donât be afraid to involve HR to help facilitate these awkward and tense discussions. Knowing Your Rights Knowing your rights is the first step in handling discrimination attached to your pregnancy. An employer canât fire a person based on many things including their race, religion, disability, or their pregnancy, among others. They also canât deny your employment, deny a promotion, cut your pay, or change your benefits based on your pregnancy. If your job is difficult to do because of your pregnancy, your employer needs to accomodate you. You cannot be harassed, you should have all the same rights given to an employee with a temporary disability, and you cannot be punished for filing a complaint about pregnancy discrimination. You should also be given breaks to pump or breastfeed as well as a reasonable location to do it. Each state will also have its own laws about pregnancy discrimination, so make sure you do your research in your state. Youâll also have additional laws under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) that may apply, which is enforced by the Department of Labor. What to Do if You Encounter Discrimination All of these rights are outlined in the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, and if your employer violates any of them, you can file a claim with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) â" or the Departmenet of Labor if itâs an FMLA issue. Remember to file within 180 days from the day the discrimination happened. Itâs also important to keep a log of any discriminatory behavior, and to review your employee handbook to understand your employerâs policies. You can also speak with your HR department to attempt to rectify the situation without filing a complaint, or speaking to an EEOC counselor. If you decide to file a complaint, your employer will be notified and the EEOC can either: Settle, or refer you and your employer to a mediator. File a lawsuit if mediation doesnât get anywhere. Dismiss the case and send you a letter that notifies you that you can sue them yourself. Prioritizing Your Health and Happiness You should really be prioritizing your health and happiness during your pregnancy, and if that means not telling your employer about your pregnancy, you have that right. If youâre taking the 12 weeks of maternity leave that youâre entitled to per the FMLA, you should notify your employer at least 30 days before you take it. Otherwise, you donât have to tell them if you can get away with it. In the meantime, focus on ways to stay healthy in your pregnancy. This includes getting good sleep, getting plenty of exercise, drinking water, and allowing yourself to relax. Though it can be hard to focus on reducing stress when your employer is making your pregnancy difficult, remember your wellness is the priority. It can be difficult to maneuver through workplace discrimination because of the sensitive and accusatory nature of it, but itâs important to trust your feelings on how youâre being treated. You have rights, and youâre allowed to bring up the concerns you have that are related to how youâre being treated during this time. Just because youâre pregnant, or postpartum, doesnât mean you arenât just as capable, hardworking, or as deserving as other employees, and you deserve to be treated that way. How to Make Less Noise When You Play Guitar.
How to Make Less Noise When You Play Guitar. Helping Your Child to Learn Guitar - Quietly. ChaptersThe Musical Advantages of SoundproofingHow Do I Limit the Noise from Low Notes?Reducing Noise from Mid-range NotesSoundproof Your Room to Reduce the High NotesInsulate Your Windows to Protect Your Neighbors From Nuisance NoisePrivate Guitar Lessons: Avoid the Noise by Furnishing your RoomFinally, Electric Guitar Players: Headphones! The good news is, your child has listened to your advice and finally decided to embark on their new musical career. Now the next step is guitar lessons. The good news is that theyâre practicing the guitar regularly in their room. But the bad news it that they're subjecting you, as well as all the neighbors, to all of their wrong notes. Listening to them strum, fret wrong notes, twang up and down the fretboard, practice raucous guitar chords, power chords, and barre chords, and attempt to play guitar solos - all of this can be fairly excruciating, even for the most loving parents. Even your own favorite songs can become hellish to listen to wh en your child has been massacring the chord progressions, the rhythm guitar, or even just the basic chords over and over again. Sometimes, it can feel like your kid's ambition to be a guitar player might not be worth the pain. Cancel the guitar lesson! might be a frequent thought. Or, if only they were so enthusiastic about music theory!Electric and acoustic guitars can both play a wide range of notes, which can be really low and cause vibrations, or really high and resonate throughout the neighborhood. Having someone in your house learn guitar can be a nightmare for your neighbors - particularly if your kid is learning how to play guitar with an amplifier. But even if they are not, hearing the same arpeggio or major scale being played a hundred times, even on a classical guitar, can be too much.To protect yourself from lots of noise (not to mention potential complaints from your neighbors) itâs essential to take a few extra steps. Begin by reassuring your kid that their new guita r passion is great. But take some steps for them to play their pentatonic scale, their fingerstyle, and all their guitar tricks in private - and save yourself a trip to the ear doctor.Today at Superprof weâre explaining how you can limit all the sounds from your child taking private guitar lessons at home. By insulating your walls and ceiling, youâll start to get a much better quality of sound as the sound waves move better through the room.Youâll also be able to hear your notes more precisely. You'll be able to get a better accuracy in your blues guitar or jazz guitar, in your guitar tabs, and in more complex styles such as fingerpicking. Accuracy is the key to guitar practice - and the best guitar players are the accurate ones (apart from, say, Hendrix, obviously). For any musician, this is a defi nite advantage as youâll be able to hear your playing more clearly. Itâs especially helpful if youâre playing guitar, where the notes tend to be higher, or when you are picking out the individual notes in a guitar chord.Once youâve bought your first guitar, soundproofing is a good option to consider to help you improve faster. You can play songs to your heart's content, and practice your rock guitar or lead guitar without anyone noticing your mistakes.Itâll be really good for you to take some guitar lessons and then be able to practice your scales, arpeggios, and chord shapes in a room that has been properly soundproofed. Once your fingers have learned to slide along the strings, your ear will learn to hear all of the notes. But itâs better when youâre hearing them properly. How Do I Limit the Noise from Low Notes? If youâve ever found yourself next to an amp vibrating with bass notes, you can understand your neighborâs suffering when youâre playing low notes on yo ur guitar when practising for your bass guitar lessons. As you know, low notes often cause some major vibrations which are often the source of complaints about noise pollution. If you havenât installed your soundproofing properly or if you donât have any, those vibrations wonât just be annoying your family. Even you may end up annoyed, and it may make it difficult to identify the quality of the sound youâre getting in return. The best advice to counteract the vibrations from your bass notes is to use plywood, about half a foot (at maximum) from your wall. Between the wall and the plywood, weâd recommend adding wool, which will help stop vibrations and kill the sound.Unfortunately, if you take guitar lessons at home, youâve probably never had the chance to play guitar in a proper auditorium. Your room may already be a little small, so use the technique below to try and considerably reduce the amount of space youâre using. If you want to practice your beginner guitar tabl ature playing in a small room and limit your noise, an easy solution is to make a sound-shield around the room. Once again, weâd recommend using thin panels of plywood, and some wool to go behind the panel. Place your panels up high where the ceiling meets the walls. This way, your space at the floor level will stay the same, even if you lose a bit of height in some places. If the noise remains a problem, you can repeat the method in all four corners of the room.Reducing Noise from Mid-range NotesWhen you take guitar lessons for beginners or join a guitar course, one of the most common solutions to reduce the noise are egg cartons. Itâs really easy and might seem a bit strange, but it definitely works. To reduce your mid range notes, egg cartons are perfect.Of course, youâll have to eat quite a few eggs in order to paper over your whole ceiling, but the quality/price ratio is still really good. With your egg cartons on the ceiling, youâll reduce the noise from your guitar as you move onto higher notes. In any case, the cartons will help break the sound waves, and reduce the overall volume of your playing. You also get great results if youâre playing and singing at the same time. Itâs true for an acoustic guitar, but even more so for an electric one! This one ain't so much about the chord progression practice, but the improvisation and the Clapton solos. To stop the high notes and avoid bothering your family, the combination of plywood and wool that you put on your walls will also be really useful. But that isnât all!It can be a bit much when someone is playing the guitar endlessly...You can also protect your floor by using porous materials. To do so, there are two popular options - you could fully carpet the floor, which has the advantage of covering the whole floor. Or you could just put down a thick carpet.Insulate Your Windows to Protect Your Neighbors From Nuisance NoiseAs you progress in your guitar lessons, you will gain confidence with your new instrument.Joy will quickly take the place of the frustration you felt when you were first starting out and your playing will soon be up to scratch! But as you play more and more, you risk annoying your neighbors, and so it might be a good idea to also do so me work to your windows. Honestly, your neighbours don't need to hear you practice your major chord, your chromatic exercises, or your exercises with a metronome. And, blimey, they don't need to hear you tune a guitar either. There are several options for the budding musician.Insulating your windows can keep the sound in when your child is playing the guitar. For a start you could insulate your hinges. For about $15 you can pick up a resin that will harden and cut back on nuisance noises by up to 10 decibels.Thereâs also another option, although it is a lot more expensive - super insulated windows. You can find these from specialist window producers, and they insulate from both heat and sound. Theyâre made up of a special âlow viscosityâ glass, a small air pocket, and then soundproofed glass on the inside. This double glazing is made up of two thin pieces of glass, about 4mm thick, separated by sound dampening material thatâs 1 or 2mm thick.Thereâs also a third option for your windows, and one that's somewhat more affordable - keep the window that is already in the room and just add a second one. Buy a basic window pane, and install it about half a foot from the other window. In this case, itâs important to be quite careful with the placement of the window - you canât just install it any which way. If you arenât careful, the noises will continue and your home-made double glazing wonât make any difference!Private Guitar Lessons: Avoid the Noise by Furnishing your RoomTake a minute to think about the different soundproofing techniques that weâve discussed in this article. Will they suffice? Will your upstairs and downstairs neighbors, your parents, and your siblings be safe from noise? Not really. Thereâs one thing left to do now that you know how to play the guitar. What weâre trying to say here, is that even with your soundproofing efforts, some noise is still likely to escape your room or music studio if they are only lightly furnished. Itâs especially important if youâre playing the guitar frequently. The sound waves will continue right through the walls and ceilings, which will still be passing on some slight vibrations. Therefore, it is important to finish your work by placing furniture in the four corners of the room to help break the sound waves. Finally, Electric Guitar Players: Headphones! One of the great things about being an electric guitar player these days is that the amp technology is a bit more sophisticated. You don't have to turn it up to eleven to get the desired effect.Indeed, you can just plug some headphones into the headphone jack! This cuts out sound for everyone, apart from the person playing the guitar!Whilst this is not a solution that should be used all the time - because it can damage your kid's ears - when you need a break it can be handy. Then they can practice their guitar music and guitar songs, strum their open chords, practice their guitar solo skills and broader guitar skills i n peace! And if you have any questions, one of the advantages of having a guitar teacher is that they can give you advice!Noise and their problems always have a solution. And a bit of extra work is easily balanced by the advantages of guitar lessons for children.

Some students may visibly struggle with classes whilst others might have emotional struggles to try to keep on top of⦠the main thing is to not suffer in silence! This doesn't mean that your whole class needs to know that you are falling behind, but you should at least speak to your teacher and see if they can recommend any additional classes, revision sessions, TV programmes, books, websites or even Biology tutors in the area. There are many ways that you can make life easier for yourself when studying towards your GCSEs, and the great thing is that many of them are free. The key to learning success is to plan, so don't leave everything until the last minute and wind up full of tension - get organised now and take inspiration from our tips below to help you with your Biology studies, including tips for revising for the Biology curriculum.Build A Study And Revision PlannerIt is never too early to start thinking about your exams, even if they are over a year away. You can use many online tools to help you build a trusty revision planner, one of which can be found via The Student Room, but it is just as easy to create a hand-written diary if you prefer in which you can put all your school-related information. If you opt for the paper version, youâll need to go out and buy yourself a diary or planner, but bear in mind that this should ideally be an academic one which runs from September to September.Do you know you can get an online biology tutor here?A journal or planner can help you to organise revision sessions and plan independent study. Photo credit: Irene Bonacchi via Visual hunt / CC BY-NDIn this planner, be sure to write down all of your key dates , like the dates of the exams if you know them already. This will give you a goal to work towards. Donât forget to keep the journal up to date by putting in anything and everything linked to your Biology studies, like homework deadlines, listing revision sessions, and adding reminders (like a prompt regarding a scientific event or a suggestion to complete a past paper). If you find it easier to create your study planner digitally, you can benefit from linking it to your mobile phone calendar and then receiving alerts without having to remember to carry around or consult your diary. This is perfect for pupils who rely heavily on their phones as they can use the device to their advantage and to encourage learning with ease (you can even download tailored revision apps onto your phone too so you can do much of your exam preparation from your phone - see below for more details).Ask QuestionsDonât be afraid to ask questions throughout your Biology course, and donât leave it until it is too late!Your teacher will be more than happy to help you when you have questions about the course or the exam, by either offering you advice or by pointing you in the direction of resources to look at.So don't sit at the back of the class wishing you had asked that question, the chances are that some of your peers are probably wondering the same thing! However, donât forget that there are many others ways to get answers nowadays too if you missed your chance in class. For instance, the Internet is a huge network that connects us with resources but also with people who have similar interests and who can offer helpful discussions.Forums like the one found on The Student Room are specifically designed for students to interact with eachother, share their concerns, offer advice or simply to vent frustration about their education. You may find that pupils one year ahead of you can offer you some friendly suggestions regarding the course but do remember that your exam could be quite di fferent to theirs due to the recent changes so don't take their word on absolutely everything.Make Use Of Biology Past PapersAs your teacher will no doubt have told you, past papers are one of the best forms of revision that you can do in the run up to exams. But what about when your particular exam has never been set before?Regardless of the changes to curriculums and grading system, the content of Biology remains the same. Itâs not like the answers to scientific questions change from one year to the next! While some of the structure will have changed, you can bet that many of the questions will share strong similarities with the questions you will be faced with come next year or the following year when you sit down to take your exam.As such, donât be put off using past papers to work on your exam technique, but just bear in mind that the exam you take wonât follow the exact same flow. Going over some of the essential Biology vocabulary is also very important as it helps to p repare you to give sophisticated answers that will impress the examiner.Past papers are a great way to practice and improve your exam technique. As you may have guessed, the sauce accompanying the chicken originated in the Basque country. The sauce is the most important part of poulet basquaise. (Source: RitaE)The sauce is the foundation of the recipe. Locally, itâs known as a âpiperadeâ and is made using tomatoes, garlic, onions, and peppers. It was also made using bread, but has evolved and now comes with free-range chicken. The recipeâs also quite simple.Start by browning pieces of garlic, onion, and peppers in some olive oil. Then add bits of peeled tomatoes. Cover the pot and let it all simmer for twenty minutes. While you wait, cut the chicken if you didnât buy it pre-cut. Fry it in a pan as you add salt and pepper to taste. At the end of the 20 minutes, mix the chicken into the pot. Add a bouquet-garni, some white wine, or stock. Let it all simmer for around 35 minutes. This will let the chicken take on the flavour of the tomatoes. We no longer think that everything is made of water or fire, for example, or that the human body is composed of only four things. From this subject â" one you might sigh about in the classroom, or get frustrated at before exams â" came some of the most important developments of the human race. The field of chemistry has contributed to this development, and this discipline has given us some of our basic knowledge of the world. All these things we might now take for granted: that the world is made of tiny little particles, that you can burn things like coal to get heat. Not only that, but chemistry has revolutionised the way we live our lives â" offering us technologies from radiation to solar panels to the dye in jeans. If a lot of people think that chemistry is for the academic, the professor, or the weirdo scientist in his big round glasses and white lab coat, it is important to remember that it is so much more than that. And those weirdo chemists changed your life in more ways than you probably realise. In this article, weâll look at ten of the most important scientists in the history of chemistry. You can decide just how crucial their discoveries have been.chemistry tutor guide your learning!Alfred NobelYou know this name too. This chemist and businessman, Alfred Nobel (1833-1896), is known in all fields, due to the Nobel Prize â" the award for excellence in literature, the sciences, and economics. But this manâs biography is not as nice as you might expect. His professional life was in selling weapons â" explosives, mainly â" and to chemistry, his contributions were generally in inventing the explosives that he sold.Nobelâs main achievement was the invention of dynamite. Intended as a tool for construction â" for roads, industry, and canals â" this chemical discovery was to have a sordid history, as we know.In his later years, as the story goes, he felt a little guilty about producing one of the most destructive chemical substances ever devised. He donated his massive fortune to inaugurating the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Physics, Medicine, and Peace.Find out what the essential equipment you need in your chemistry set is.Twentieth-Century Chemists You Should KnowIn the twentieth century, the subject of chemistry blossoms even further, branching out into different sub-disciplines and becoming the subject we know today.Linus PaulingLinus Carl Pauling (1901-1994) has often been hailed as one of the most important scientists ever to have lived â" and if you havenât heard of him, now is your opportunity.Pauling essentially invented, single-handedly, what we now know as molecular biology â" the study of things like proteins and acids in the body â" and quantum chemistry, or the study of the relationships between the smallest things in the atom. And if, at school, youâve heard of covalent or ionic bonds â" you have Pauling to thank for understanding them too. Learn more about chemical bonds in our piece on basic chemistry concepts. As a lifelong activist for nuclear disarmament, Pauling was not only a Nobel Laureate in chemistry, but he won the Nobel Peace Prize too. Finally, his research into proteins also inspired the work of Francis Crick and James Watson, who, without Pauling, would never have discovered the structure of DNA.Dorothy HodgkinNow time for a chemist that is often overlooked in the histories of famous scientists: Dorothy Hodgkin (1910-1994). Another Nobel Laureate, Hodgkin is the only British woman to have ever won a Nobel Prize in a science. Hodgkinâs main discoveries were in the structure of molecules and proteins in the body, and her research had a massive impact on biochemistry and medicine. She and her team worked on the structure of penicillin, vitamin B12, and, importantly, insulin. Her career was notable for her advocating for the importance of knowledge of insulin, too â" for its central role in diabetes. My online chemistry tutor introduced me to her work; she is a truly admirable scientist!Kathleen LonsdaleAnd another twentieth-century chemist that deserves to be more famous than she is: Kathleen Lonsdale (1903-1971). As a scientist, she was one of the first women to be elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society and was awarded numerous titles for her important work in crystallography, or the study of the arrangement of atoms in crystals.Alongside her work on diamonds, and her profoundly influential research into the structure of benzene, she was an advocate for pacifism and an inspiration for women scientists across the world.Still hungry for chemistry?
